Technology
Renewable diesel is a high purity fuel comprising hydrocarbon molecules derived from renewable sources such as used vegetable oils, trap grease or animal fats using a proprietary process. It is indistinguishable from traditional diesel fuel and can be used as a direct replacement or to enhance the quality of the existing diesel stock by blending in any proportion.
The Cetane Energy process units are not just bench-top or pilot systems, they are proven and fully operational. The Carlsbad facility in New Mexico is illustrated on this website.
Cetane Energy's renewable diesel process deoxygenates and hydrogenates biological feedstocks such as vegetable oils and animal fats to produce a highly stable, renewable diesel fuel. This occurs using a proprietary process involving the use of solid catalysts, heat, pressure and distillation.
The process will work with a wide range of biofeedstocks from animal fat (tallow) to second generation feedstock, such as algal oils. It will work effectively with high FFA feedstocks opening up opportunities to use feedstock from a broad range of sources

It has superior properties compared to other diesel fuel options available today. Renewable diesel offers higher cetane levels than biodiesel and lower emissions than fossil diesel. Because it is chemically almost identical to traditional diesel fuel, renewable diesel can be used in today's tanks, pipelines, trucks, pumps and automobiles without changes, which will save significant expense as demand for renewable fuels grows.
